We’ll be celebrating together with MCCD and USFWS and YOU with activities, crafts, lessons and more at Lost Valley Visitor Center. This is a free, drop-in event. All ages are welcome.
Join us to learn more about the importance of stopover locations in a bird’s migration journey. Many birds rely on multiple ecosystems for wintering, feeding and breeding areas. Fortunately, McHenry County Conservation District and Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge provide these habitats.
The theme for World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2026, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observation Matter” highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations. Community science, ranging from backyard bird counts to large-scale coordinated surveys/schemes, provide information on species distribution, abundance trends, migration timing, and breeding success. This data is important to identify conservation priorities, and inform effective conservation action plans and strategies.
