The Friends of Hackmatack NWR June 11th Friends Gathering will highlight Tamarack Farms – the 985-acre parcel acquired by The Conservation Fund, Openlands, Illinois Audubon and a number of other organizations and individuals. This acquisition represents the largest purchase of land for conservation purposes in Northeastern Illinois in nearly 30 years!!! Perhaps you’ve seen the Press Release about Tamarack Farms and would like an opportunity to learn more about the property or even see it??
Join the Friends of Hackmatack NWR at 6:30 pm on June 11th for this special “early bird” opportunity to learn more about Tamarack Farms and (weather permitting) tour a portion of the site. We will be meeting at the north entrance to Tamarack Farms (look for signs located at 6217 Broadway Street in Richmond – please consult the map). It may be a number of years before the property is conveyed to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and open to the public – so take advantage of this opportunity to witness the property firsthand.
Ed Collins will provide more detail about the ecological significance of the site and discuss its importance from a landscape perspective and lead the tour of the property. Also, Will Meeks – Regional Director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is planning to attend and will be making a special presentation. The Friends will also be recognizing Cathy Nigg, a long-time Service employee and supporter of the Refuge with a Hackmatack Hero Award. Again, this is an unique opportunity to be part of a special evening featuring Tamarack Farms and senior leadership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
