Conservation of the Blanding’s Turtle at the Lake County Forest Preserves
Gary Glowacki, Wildlife Ecologist, Lake County Forest Preserve District will tell us about his work conserving the Blanding’s Turtle. The Blanding’s Turtle is a long-lived semi-aquatic turtle in decline throughout its range primarily due to habitat loss, increased levels of predation, poaching and low levels of both juvenile and adult survivorship. In response to declines, the Lake County Forest Preserve District initiated a recovery program in 2010. Learn how the District is using innovative conservation strategies such as head-starting, predator control, and habitat restoration to bolster local populations of this globally imperiled species.
